Just my view but I think mind mapping works best with paper and coloured pens/pencils because of the action of creating the images by hand creates a stronger link in your mind.
I’m not saying software doesn’t work, it certainly helps to distribute it but I think Tony Buzan’s approach really does work best. Just my thoughts.

I have one of Buzan’s books, just never seem to have the time to read it properly (like a lot of other books!).
Like a lot of these things, specifically GTD, etc., I to think starting on paper is the way to go, moving on to software solutions later if appropriate.
